Media Terms

Context- The time, place and mindset of the audience are all features of context that affect how a media text is read. eg. Social, Political, cultural, economic.

Subsidiary- A small company owned and controlled by a larger parent company.

Mid Market Tabloid- A middle-market newspaper is a newspaper that attempts to cater to readers who like entertainment as well as the coverage of important news events.

Rhetoric- Questions asked for dramatic effect or to make a point.

Ombudsman- An official appointed to investigate public complaints about a company, organisation or public authority.

Hyperbole- Exaggerated statements and claims that are over the top in their expression.

Progressives- People who are forward-thinking and advocate social reform.

Dual Convergence- Tabloids and broadsheets borrow conventions from each genre in the use of media language and values so they increasingly resemble one another.

Platform- The technologies, software or apps that allow media producers and consumers to interact, such as social media.

Ofcom- The regulator for the communications services that we use- covers regulation of broadband, WIFI, landline and mobile services as well as TV, on demand and radio.

Soft News- The term used to refer to journalism that is sensational, emotional and personal. It uses conversational language and is expressive.

Hard News- The term used to refer to journalism that is very serious, well written and balanced. It uses complex language.

Hegemony- The predominance of one social group over another to legitimise social norms. The idea of ideological hegemony is proposed in the work of Gramsci, a neo-Marxist, who looked at the way in which ideal ology was used to reinforce the social power, through economic and political systems, of the elite ruling class over the subject or working classes.
Dominant Group-

Journalism- The profession of writing for a newspaper, news website, news broadcast or magazine.

Academic Ideas- Critical ideas or theories written by academic researchers in a particular field or area of expertise. They help to develop understanding and knowledge about the specific topic they are written about.
