Exam Question on Unseen Front Covers

SOURCES A AND B COVER THE SAME NEWS EVENT BUT ARE FROM TWO DIFFERENT NEWSPAPERS. HOW FAR HAS THE COMBINATION OF ELEMENTS OF MEDIA LANGUAGE INFLUENCED MEANING IN THE SOURCES? IN YOUR ANSWER YOU MUST:

 • EXPLAIN HOW THE COMBINATION OF ELEMENTS OF MEDIA LANGUAGE INFLUENCES MEANING IN NEWSPAPERS
 • ANALYSE HOW MEDIA LANGUAGE HAS BEEN USED TO CONSTRUCT MEANING IN THE SOURCES
 • MAKE JUDGEMENTS AND REACH CONCLUSIONS ABOUT HOW FAR THE COMBINATION OF ELEMENTS OF MEDIA LANGUAGE HAS INFLUENCED MEANING IN THE SOURCES.

Both media products use different media language to convey different meanings which would most appeal to their target audiences. However, the layout and techniques each paper uses follows conventions and so would not be seen as particularly outlandish, both papers will be excepted by different audiences and may be rejected by others.

The daily Mail, who's target audience is working class, middle aged women, uses a large headline in bold, san serif font which is placed strategically in the centre of the page to anchor the text as well as grab the attention of the reader. The bolder and larger print could connotate a lack of seriousness, suggesting that the reader is less intellectual. This is also supported by the lead story being in bullet points, showing a lack of understanding and seriousness about the subject. The cover photo does not relate to the story, again making it seem unimportant. The splash and byline all relate to entertainment and celebrities, which materialistically would be attractive to the Daily Mails target audience.

On the other hand the target audience for the Independent is upper class, intellectual people who are interested in cultural affairs and politics. Therefore conventionally the paper will produce serious and detailed stories that would appeal to their target audience. The headline is smaller, in a bold, san serif font seems to be serious as it is about a serious topic. The large cover photo is centred and pictures the refugees, which links to the cover story. There is no splash or other features unrelated to the article also showing how the paper is focused on exhibiting the seriousness of the issue in the lead story.
